PT100 Cable 3x0.34 mm² with Fiberglass Insulation and Steel Braid – 100-Meter Roll

PT100 Cable 3x0.34 mm² is an industrial sensor cable designed to connect three-wire RTD/PT100 temperature sensors to measurement and control devices. It can be used in connections between PT100 sensor and temperature indicator, controller, data logger, PLC RTD input or control panel.

The product has a protective construction consisting of fiberglass inner insulation, fiberglass outer construction and steel braid. While fiberglass insulation is preferred in fixed sensor connections where temperature effects are present, the steel braid helps protect the cable body against friction and surface mechanical effects.

The 3x0.34 mm² cross-section construction offers a larger nominal conductor cross-section than the 3x0.22 mm² option. Under the conditions of the same conductor material and the same cable length, larger cross-section helps reduce core resistance. This feature can be especially advantageous in three-wire PT100 applications where connection distance, cable resistance and terminal compatibility are evaluated together.

The product is supplied as a single 100-meter roll and can be cut to the required lengths for use in sensor production, machine manufacturing, control panel assembly, maintenance work, and field applications.

This product is not a thermocouple cable or a power supply cable. It should be used to transmit the temperature-dependent resistance change of the PT100 sensor to the measuring instrument. The sensor connection configuration, the instrument's RTD input, and the cable core count should be checked before use.

Difference Between the 0.34 mm² and 0.22 mm² Cross-Sections

Having a nominal cross-section of each core 0.34 mm² means an approximately 55 percent larger conductor cross-section than the option with a cross-section of 0.22 mm². When the conductor material and length are the same, the larger cross-section reduces the electrical resistance of the cores.

In theory, under the same material and length conditions, the resistance of a 0.34 mm² core may be approximately 35 percent lower than that of a 0.22 mm² core. The actual resistance depends on the conductor material, manufacturing tolerances, cable length, and connection points.

A larger cross-section can help reduce the effect of cable resistance on the measurement circuit, especially in long connection routes. However, for the balancing in the three-wire PT100 system to work correctly, the measuring instrument must support the three-wire RTD input and the length, cross-section and conductor properties of the relevant cores must be compatible.

The 0.34 mm² cross-section may require more connection space than the 0.22 mm² option. The measuring-instrument terminal, cable ferrule, terminal block, and other connection components must be checked for compatibility with the 0.34 mm² core cross-section.

Fiberglass Insulation Structure

Fiberglass insulation used in the cores and outer construction of the cable is preferred for fixed sensor connections in environments exposed to heat where standard plastic insulations are not suitable. It can be evaluated in PT100 connections near furnaces, machines, process lines and heat treatment equipment.

The fiberglass braided structure helps to electrically separate the cable cores and protect the outer surface. Due to its braided surface structure, the cable should not be crushed, rubbed against sharp edges, or bent to a smaller diameter than necessary during installation.

The exact operating temperature of the cable should not be determined by looking at the fiberglass insulation alone. Conductor construction, outer braid, terminal, connector, splice points and temperature limits of the sensor connection should be evaluated together.

Protection Provided by the Steel Braid

The steel braid on the outside creates an auxiliary mechanical protection layer around the cable. It contributes to the protection of the cable body against friction and light mechanical effects in routes with machine body, panel passage, cable duct and surface contact.

The main function of steel braid is mechanical protection. If the braid is planned to be used as an electrical shield, electrical continuity, coverage structure, connection method and measuring instrument manufacturer's instructions should also be evaluated.

The shield connection or grounding method is not the same in every application. The electrical project, control panel structure and connection instructions of the device manufacturer should be used as the basis.

Three-Wire PT100 Connection

PT100 is a RTD sensor whose electrical resistance changes depending on temperature. Therefore, the PT100 connection differs from the thermoelectric voltage measurement used in thermocouples.

The three-wire PT100 connection can help compensate for the effect of connecting cable resistance on the measurement when the measuring instrument supports three-wire RTD input and the electrical characteristics of the cable cores are suitable.

In a three-wire system, the length, nominal cross-sectional area, and conductor properties of the two cores connected to the same side of the sensor should be as equal as possible. If a splice is required, the connection should be continued using cores of the same construction and suitable connection components.

There are two white and one red core on the cable. Core colors may make connection control easier, but installation should not be done based on color alone. The sensor wiring diagram and the measuring instrument terminal descriptions must be verified.

Material and Durability Properties

Fiberglass insulation is a preferred structure in industrial sensor connections where temperature effects are present. However, the exact temperature limit and environmental suitability of the cable must be determined according to the manufacturer's technical documentation.

The steel braid does not transform the cable into a completely enclosed or leak-proof outer sheath. In environments where there is moisture, liquid, oil, chemicals or dense dust, the product's compliance with environmental conditions should also be checked.

The cable should not be subjected to excessive pulling force, crushing, sharp edges or repeated bending. Steel braid helps with mechanical protection, but does not provide unlimited protection against heavy mechanical loads.

The possibility of hot surfaces, moving parts, vibration, liquid contact and mechanical impact should be evaluated together during the assembly route. When necessary, a protective spiral, channel, fitting or connection apparatus should be used.

Connection and Usage Notes

The cables must be connected to the PT100 sensor and the corresponding RTD terminals of the measuring instrument. Before installation, the sensor connection diagram and the three-wire PT100 input structure of the device should be checked.

In a three-wire connection, it is important that the lengths, cross-sections and connection points of the two cores used in the same measuring branch are similar. Significant differences in core properties can reduce the effectiveness of cable resistance compensation.

When using 0.34 mm² core cross-section, the compliance of device terminals, terminals, ferrules and other connection elements with this cross-section should be checked. Cores should not be crushed or left exposed outside the terminal during connection.

While preparing the cable end, care should be taken to ensure that the steel braid wires do not come into contact with the measurement cores or device terminals. The shield must be properly removed and the connection area must be isolated in accordance with the application.

The PT100 cable should be routed as far as possible from motor supply lines, inverter outputs, contactor lines and high-current power cables.

Core colors alone do not prove connection function or official standard compliance. The sensor manufacturer's connection diagram and the terminal descriptions of the measuring instrument should be used as the basis.

100-Meter Roll Sales Model

The product is supplied as a single 100-meter roll. Cutting can be done from the roll in lengths required by production, maintenance, panel assembly or field application.

When determining the cutting length, the actual route between the sensor and the measuring instrument, the distance within the panel, the turning points and the mounting allowance required for the terminal connection must be taken into account.

When unrolling, care should be taken to ensure that the cable is not knotted, crushed or bent to a smaller diameter than necessary. The unused section should be stored in a dry, clean area away from the risk of mechanical damage.

  • Connection structure: Check that the PT100 system has a two-, three- or four-wire connection.
  • Number of cores: A suitable three-core sensor cable must be used for the three-wire PT100 connection.
  • Section: Connection length, core resistance, terminal size and installation area should be evaluated together.
  • Insulation: The fiberglass and steel braid structure must be compared with the temperature and mechanical conditions of the application.
  • Sales quantity: The estimated consumption of a 100-meter roll in the production and maintenance plan should be calculated.

How to Choose the Correct PT100 Cable?

When selecting the PT100 cable, the two-, three- or four-wire connection structure of the sensor; RTD input of the measuring instrument; connection distance; core cross-sectional area; Insulation structure and mechanical protection need should be evaluated together.

This 3x0.34 mm² product has a three-core construction and should be considered for three-wire PT100 connections. A suitable two-core sensor cable must be used in two-wire systems, and a suitable four-core sensor cable in four-wire systems.

The 3x0.34 mm² option offers a larger core cross-section and lower conductor resistance under the same conditions as the 3x0.22 mm² product. On the other hand, larger external dimensions may require a larger terminal area or different connection components.

In order to benefit from the cable resistance balancing advantage of the three-wire connection, the measuring instrument must support the three-wire RTD input and the electrical properties of the relevant cores must be compatible.
